Four year old Sidney Want was scared to go to bed at night because he imagined monsters in his bed. Like many children his age, Sidney had an overactive imagination that couldn’t be calmed with words.
In frustration, his mum, 44-year-old Gold Coast business owner Libby, asked him to describe the monsters and from his stories, created a book that turned night time dramas into monster slaying fun and bedtime ease.
Mum’s Marvellous Monster Spray is a book written by Libby (former Tenterfield Lass) and illustrated by husband and dad Andrew (former Lismore Lad), owners of successful Want X Jewellery company.
‘Mum’s Marvellous Monster Spray,’ guides kids through the steps of making a fool-proof, traditional recipe of monster repellent to help ease their legitimate fear over imaginary monsters.
Libby explains, ‘Kids are flooded with scary images daily, Parents can only monitor what kids watch but not what they imagine.’
The new book also companion activities, with downloadable content for parents and children to make their own monster spray, as well as get to know the monsters themselves.
Libby says “Parents are so busy these days, and the book gives them a tool to help calm over active imaginations’
Running their successful jewellery business, Libby has always tried to balance her work life with her home life.
“It was important for me to find a way to help the boys understand their fears, but also feel empowered to combat those fears”
“Telling a child that monsters don’t exist isn’t going to make the fears go away, but if they feel that they can beat them with games and special monster spray, it helps them feel heard.
Since reading the stories to them, both boys settle well at night, with no fear.
“It’s been a godsend” said Libby “Where once bedtimes were a drama, now the boys happily read the books and fall asleep with no problem at all.”
Word about the book has spread with Libby being asked by many daycare centres and libraries to run workshops to help kids overcome fear.
